Escales:: Memories of another Coventry air tragedy
Aug 19 2008 By Helen Thomas

SUNDAY'S air tragedy has brought memories flooding back for people living nearby in the Willenhall area of Coventry.

Residents have been remembering the moment on December 21, 1994 when a cargo plane crashed into Willenhall Woods off Middle Ride.

The Boeing 737 had been making its descent to Coventry Airport in thick fog when it spiralled out of control and plummeted to earth, killing all the men on board.

The tragedy rocked the community of Willenhall and left stunned residents in horror knowing that the housing estate had been missed by a matter of yards.

Sylvia Lanigan, who runs the Willenhall Wood Residents' Association, remembers the crash vividly.

She said: "Many people remember how traumatic the 1994 crash was and still talk about it even now.

"The part of the wood where the plane landed still hasn't grown back and we have great sympathy for the families of those killed in this recent crash.

"As terrible as it sounds I think people are just thankful that it was a small light aircraft as it could have been much worse if it had been a big Thomson aircraft.

"The people who live on the flight-path are very concerned because the planes fly very low over their houses.

"There are people who live in blocks of flats who can actually see the pilot when planes fly over.

"After the accident in 1994 the airport said there would not be another crash and now there has been a second in 14 years.

"The number of near misses they have happen far too often and we just worry there will be an even bigger accident in the future.

"As a residents' group, we have opposed expansion of the airport and have represented the people who live nearby who do not want it.

"Increasing capacity to two million people (passengers) is just too much, that would be a flight every 15 minutes.

"People are not only against the proposal because of the effects it would have on their quality of life, but also because of fear of air crashes.

"Coventry is not in a good location for an airport, it isn't like Heathrow or Birmingham which are situated in lovely big flat areas which can take the traffic. We set up a memorial plaque in the wood in 2004 and invited the families of the crew who died to a special service.

"Local residents told their stories about the crash, how pots were shaking on the walls, and the houses shook, which was just so terrifying."

They fly too low over our homes

JACQUI DAVIS, 55, of Leyside, Willenhall, was at home with her husband Thomas, 55, and son Bryn, when the jet crashed 14 years ago.

She said: "I remember it clearly because it landed right opposite my house while I was having a cup of tea.

"The pilot came too low and we think he hit a pylon, clipped the houses on the way into the wood and then burst into flames.

"I saw the paramedics take the men away in body bags which was very upsetting, especially so close to Christmas which is supposed to be a time to celebrate.

"I remember being so shocked - when something like that happens you just can't believe it.

"We have been protesting for years about plans to expand the airport, as the planes are just too low coming over houses.

"We even get interference on our TV when they fly over which you aren't supposed to and you can't hear yourself think.

"It is such a shame that anyone has lost their lives and if the airport expands then I think it will just get worse."

Escales:: BA honours pilots, crew for averting disaster
LONDON — The crew of a British Airways Boeing 777 jet, which landed short of the runway at London's main Heathrow airport earlier this year, have been rewarded for their skill and courage, the airline said Tuesday.

The three pilots and 13 cabin crew on BA flight 38 were given the BA Safety Medal for their professionalism in getting all passengers off without serious injury and averting disaster.

The jet, travelling from Beijing with 136 passengers on board, lost power over the suburbs on its approach to the world's busiest international passenger airport on January 17.

Eighteen people were treated for minor injuries after the crash, which happened in sight of Prime Minister Gordon Brown's chartered 747 jet that was preparing to head to China and India, and caused major delays at the airport.

BA chief executive Willie Walsh said in a statement that the medal had only ever been awarded three times before and was given to mark exceptional achievement.

"The crew demonstrated incredible professionalism, first in landing the aircraft safely and then evacuating all the passengers with only a few minor injuries sustained," he said.

"The whole of British Airways is extremely proud of them."

The pilot, Captain Peter Burkill, said it was a "great privilege" but the crew's training kicked in.

collision at Manchester damages A320 and 737 today wednesday at 1330 [par vopzz]

Retour d'expériences:: collision at Manchester damages A320 and 737 today wednesday at 1330
Air accident investigators are checking systems at one of Britain's busiest airports after two planes brushed a wingtip and tailfin while taxiing to the main runway for takeoff.

Almost 300 passengers were taken off the planes after the collision at Manchester airport. Emergency tenders were at the scene immediately. A tear of several feet off the wing of a Boeing 737 is being checked by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

The collision, at 1.30pm, involved a Boeing 737 operated by Spanish airline Futura on its way to Tenerife and a Lufthansa Airbus A320 bound for Frankfurt. The planes were due to leave within five minutes of one another when the slowly moving Boeing clipped the Airbus, which was parked.

Russell Craig, head of communications for the airport, said passengers had stayed on board both aircraft while fire crews carried out initial checks. "They would have felt some kind of bump," he said.

"Obviously, if you are about to take a flight it's not something you expect to happen so I'd imagine people are feeling a little bit shaken up. We don't know whose fault it was but any incident, big or small, has to be investigated."

Tenerife passengers said people had been shocked briefly, but the main feeling was disappointment that their holidays were delayed. Both airlines said they hoped to get passengers to their destinations before today

Pour Rire:: Drunk women cause havoc on aircraft
July 28 2008 at 07:24AM

London - A plane flying from Kos, Greece, to Manchester was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Frankfurt when two British women apparently tried to open a cabin door.

Police said the pair, aged 26 and 27, became violent because they were refused more alcohol.

A family with children asked them to tone down their language. The girls started shouting, and stewards tried to calm them down.

The pilot came on and said: "We'll kick you off and we're over Serbia - and the police in Serbia aren't nice."

But they didn't calm down and started shouting at other passengers and calling one of the stewards names. One of them said: "I want a piece of him."

But the worst came when one of them slapped a woman.

The pilot then said he was landing, and one girl tried to light a cigarette but was stopped.

During the incident, the 26-year-old also attacked a flight attendant with a bottle of vodka. As the Boeing 737, which was carrying 214 people, was cruising over Austria, the pair said they wanted to open the door to "get some fresh air".

A spokesperson for XL Airways said the company was thinking of taking legal action against the two. - The Independent on Sunday

This article was originally published on page 4 of The Star on July 28, 2008
